The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore graphic

SANTA MARIA MAGGIORE

The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was built by Pope Sixtus III in 432-440 AD on the highest point of the Cispian Hill in Rome. The church reflects the doctrine adopted by the Council of Ephesus in 431 that Mary was the Mother of God. The reconstruction model illustrates the structure as it might have appeared ca. 435 AD. Footage from the model was featured in a documentary shown at the Palace of Exhibitions in Rome during the Jubilee Year in 2000 and currently being shown at the Museum of the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore.
